“Why Blue Bloods Remains TV’s Most Powerful Family Drama About Justice, Loyalty, and Sacrifice”

The hearts of Blue Bloods fans broke everywhere after the series was canceled by CBS in May of last year. In the time since, the stars have spoken out against the network’s decision to take one of its most popular shows off the air, with fans echoing their upset. Meanwhile, a handful of offshoots have been mentioned as being in the works, although nothing fully stuck until earlier this year when it was announced that Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan would be striking out with his own series. Titled Boston Blue, the project gives Danny a fresh start as he leaves New York City behind and moves to Massachusetts.

Recently speaking with Deadline, Wahlberg upped the hype surrounding the title, which will arrive in January as part of the network’s Friday night lineup. Speaking about how much folks miss the original show, the actor said,

It’s fascinating, right? Because we all mourn Blue Bloods, and still do, me as well. And I understand the audience, and your readers’ feelings because I share them. It’s very emotional to say goodbye, and when this show came along, I had just kind of turned the page and said, ‘Alright, it looks like it’s not gonna happen for Blue Bloods.’ We were hoping that somehow, someway, somebody would come, and we would continue to make our show.”

‘Boston Blue’ Will Be Something Different — And That’s Okay

For those worried that Boston Blue simply won’t compare to its procedural predecessor, Wahlberg admits that he was in the same boat when it first came across his desk, sharing,

“Then this show came my way, and I had to take a beat to look at it in the right context. In other words, it was like I kept looking back to Blue Bloods, and suddenly I was like ‘Wait a minute, I can look forward to Boston Blue?’”

At the end of the day, Wahlberg is thrilled to be given the chance to hold onto his character from Blue Bloods and get some new faces in the mix, like Ernie Hudson. There’s also a solid chance that members from the original cast will make their way up north to help Danny out on some of his cases. The actor added,

“And this is keeping Blue Bloods alive, this is carrying on the traditions and the legacies, this is a way to bring Blue Bloods forward. So, for me, once I started to see it that way, it became very exciting to me. The end of something became the beginning of something new.”
