CBS is expanding its beloved crime drama universe with the highly anticipated spinoff Boston Blue — and fans of Blue Bloods have a lot to look forward to.
Set in the heart of Boston, the new series aims to carry on the legacy of Blue Bloods while introducing a fresh storyline, a new city, and a compelling ensemble cast that includes both newcomers and familiar faces from the original show.
What Is ‘Boston Blue’ About?
Boston Blue follows a multigenerational family of law enforcement officers working in and around Boston, navigating the moral complexities of modern policing while trying to keep their family bonds intact. The series retains the emotional depth and character-driven storytelling that made Blue Bloods a fan favorite for over a decade, but with a new setting, updated themes, and a grittier tone.
Returning Cast from ‘Blue Bloods’
To bridge the worlds of Blue Bloods and Boston Blue, CBS is bringing back a few familiar faces:
- Vanessa Ray reprises her role as Officer Eddie Janko-Reagan, who transfers to Boston as part of a special interdepartmental task force.
- Steve Schirripa (Anthony Abetemarco) will appear in a recurring guest role, offering legal expertise to the Boston PD in high-stakes cases.
- Gregory Jbara (Deputy Commissioner Garrett Moore) makes cameo appearances as a liaison between New York and Boston law enforcement agencies.
These characters are expected to play a key role in connecting the original series with the spinoff’s evolving storylines.
New Faces Leading the Charge
Boston Blue introduces several new characters that promise to bring drama, heart, and conflict to the series:
- Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) stars as Detective Claire Riley, a tenacious and principled investigator with deep roots in Boston’s Irish-American community.
- Michael Evans Behling (All American) plays Officer Jordan Wells, a rising star in the department whose past may come back to haunt him.
- James Badge Dale (24, The Pacific) portrays Captain Sean Callahan, a battle-hardened veteran balancing personal loss with professional duty.
- Stephanie Arcila (9-1-1) joins as Officer Camila Torres, a transfer from Miami with a reputation for bending the rules — but always for the right reasons.
Behind the Scenes
Boston Blue is executive produced by Blue Bloods veterans Kevin Wade and Siobhan Byrne O’Connor, ensuring continuity in tone and storytelling. The pilot was directed by David Barrett, who also helmed multiple key episodes of Blue Bloods.
CBS has ordered 10 episodes for the first season, set to premiere in Fall 2025, airing Friday nights at 10 PM — the same slot that Blue Bloods dominated for years.
A Familiar Format, A Fresh Start
Much like Blue Bloods, Boston Blue will feature a signature “family dinner” scene — but with its own twist. Instead of the Reagan family gathered around a New York table, Boston Blue will show the Riley family meeting at a neighborhood diner in South Boston every week to debate, disagree, and support one another.
With a strong cast, emotional storylines, and the legacy of one of CBS’s most successful dramas behind it, Boston Blue is shaping up to be a worthy successor — and possibly the next big hit in the network’s crime drama lineup.
