In a new interview on the Morning Magic podcast with Sue and Kendra, Wahlberg teased that Boston Blue will stay closely tied to its Blue Bloods roots.

“It will be a Danny Reagan-based show, but the Reagans are only a phone call away, and Danny Reagan likes to use the phone, that’s all I’ll say,” Wahlberg said, not so slyly hinting that guest appearances could very much be on the table, adding:

“I can’t tell a lot of stuff about it other than at this point, I’m very humbled to be producing the show with Jerry Bruckheimer and some incredible writers and producers known as the Brandons. It’s an honor to keep the Blue Bloods tradition alive, and I think that’s what I’ll be doing with the show.”

The “Brandons” in question are writers/producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, best known for their work on Alert: Missing Persons Unit, S.W.A.T., L.A.’s Finest, and The Blacklist.

Donnie Wahlberg Wasn’t Originally Sold on a Spin-Off

According to reports, Boston Blue was born from a previous project called Jamaica Plain, named after a Boston neighborhood. That series originally followed a law enforcement family whose eldest daughter is partnered with a transfer from Los Angeles. When CBS made it a priority to extend the Blue Bloods universe, Wahlberg’s history with Boston made him the most sensible option, even though Wahlberg admitted he wasn’t completely sold on the idea at first – until the setting was pitched to him.

“You have to remember your roots from Boston ’cause no one in Boston will ever let you forget. I’m a proud Bostonian, I love the city. I love coming back every chance I get, and I will love filming there,” he said.

There’s no official premiere date yet, but Wahlberg did post a teaser to Instagram hinting that Boston Blue will arrive in fall 2025 on CBS.
