Donnie Wahlberg is the new kid on the block in the new Blue Bloods spinoff series, which sees Danny Reagan go to Boston.
On February 18, CBS announced there would be a “universe expansion” in the world of Blue Bloods, in which Donnie Wahlberg will be reprising his coveted role as Detective Danny Reagan.

The spinoff currently has the working title of Boston Blue and is officially in production, set to release during the 2025-2026 broadcast season. In the new series, the oldest Reagan sibling will take a position at a Boston Police Department, where he is paired with Detective Lena Peters, “the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
Boston Blue will have Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis as showrunners and executive producers, along with Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg himself as an executive producer. Sonnier and Margolis are responsible for other successful series such as L.A.’s Finest (2019-2020).
Rumors of a spinoff began circulating when CBS announced season 14 would be the last for Blue Bloods, but nothing was officially confirmed until February 18. Paramount co-CEO Brian Robbins shared in June 2024 that “new franchise extensions are coming” for multiple CBS shows, including the beloved police procedural.
Will any of the ‘Blue Bloods’ cast return for the spinoff?
While Blue Bloods wouldn’t be what it was without the Reagan family and their weekly Sunday family dinners, Boston Blue could be different. As of now, Donnie Wahlberg is the only original cast member set to star in the new spinoff. But don’t fret, as it’s early into the show’s production and things may still be in the works, including rounding up the cast.
Although nothing about the cast is confirmed, the entire Reagan clan has expressed how much they will miss filming Blue Bloods and their disappointment about its ending. Tom Selleck, who portrayed Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, has been very vocal about his feelings as the series ended, along with Wahlberg.
Tom Selleck ‘Frustrated’ by CBS Ending ‘Blue Bloods’ After 15 Years“I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses,” Selleck explained to CBS in May 2024. “We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows and still holding our place.”
Selleck spoke again in October, just months before the series ended in December, explaining that it would take time to process the show’s ending.

“I don’t believe in holding grudges… My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.”
Wahlberg shared his own emotions about filming the farewell episode, expressing his sadness for how quickly the time had gone.
