Danny Reagan Rides Again! See Donnie Wahlberg’s Comeback in ‘Boston Blue’

Wahlberg is back in uniform—but this time, he’s not walking a New York City beat. The “Blue Bloods” alum officially kicked off production on CBS’s upcoming spinoff “Boston Blue,” and he’s bringing the Reagan name with him.

Wahlberg, who played Detective Danny Reagan for 14 seasons, shared an Instagram Story on July 8 showing the first table read for the new show. His caption? “A new chapter 💙.”

The image featured the pilot script, written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis and directed by Anthony Hemingway. He also tagged his new costar, “The Walking Dead” star Sonequa Martin-Green.

Martin-Green plays Wahlberg’s new partner—a Boston detective and the eldest daughter in another prominent law enforcement family, according to CBS. The spinoff, described as a “universe expansion” of “Blue Bloods,” will follow Danny as he joins the Boston Police Department after decades with NYPD.

In an interview with Parade, Wahlberg emphasized the importance of preserving the heart of the original series:

“It’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water, to be in this new world. It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the ‘Blue Bloods’ legacy is,” he said.

“We’re keeping all of that at the forefront of our thoughts as we build this thing.”

Wahlberg Teases Familiar Faces Will Join Him on the ‘Blue Bloods’ SpinoffWhile “Boston Blue” marks a fresh start, Wahlberg is making sure fans won’t feel completely disconnected from the Reagan family. His longtime co-star Bridget Moynahan—who played Erin Reagan on the original series—is already confirmed to appear on screen and behind the camera.Wahlberg revealed on Instagram that Moynahan will be directing an episode and reprising her role, at least briefly. “Bringing her incredible directing talents,” he wrote, alongside a photo of them on set.

When a fan asked if the rest of the Reagans would show up too, Wahlberg teased, “Hopefully.”

The biggest question still looming? Whether Tom Selleck will return as family patriarch Frank Reagan. While nothing has been confirmed, Wahlberg hinted it’s not out of the question.

“New York and Boston are really close,” he told ParaDonnie Wahlberg poses in the green room during the TCA Turner Winter Press Tour 2019 at The Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa on February 11, 2019de.

“Boston Blue’ premieres October 1 on CBS.
