“CBS Just Dropped a Bombshell: Blue Bloods Sequel Show Confirmed with Shocking Location Twist!”

A Blue Bloods sequel show has been confirmed, with one returning star from the original series alongside a big location change for the show. Blue Bloods ended on December 13, 2024 with the season 14 finale, bringing a close to the story of the Reagan family and their ties to the NYPD. The last episodes managed to bring the show to a definitive conclusion, without setting up a story for what could be next. However, with the show still popular for the network, it was unclear if its universe would somehow continue beyond the original series.

Now, CBS has confirmed a Blue Bloods spinoff is in development, currently under the working title Boston Blue. The new show will see the return of Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan as he becomes part of Boston PD. The show is poised to air during the 2025-2026 TV season, meaning the first episodes are expected to arrive later this year. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serve as showrunners and executive producers.

The first official logline reads as follows: In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

Ana Dumaraog, ScreenRant’s Network TV Editor, had this to say in reaction to the news: Continuing the Blue Bloods universe with Danny’s spinoff poses some questions, including why he’s suddenly moving to Boston and what happened to his budding romance with Baez, as hinted in the finale. However, it’s also the best possible scenario for expanding the procedural franchise. Setting the spinoff in Boston is particularly clever — it isn’t too far from New York, meaning other Raegans can easily appear, but it’s separate enough that Danny’s story can progress without being bogged down by his family’s legacy.

What Blue Bloods’ Upcoming Spinoff Means For The Franchise

Boston Blue Will Be The Show’s First Spinoff

Given the announcement that Wahlberg will be coming back, it doesn’t sound like the other characters in Blue Bloods will be returning as series regulars. This means Danny will be the show’s primary focus, with newcomers like Lena, whose actor is unknown as of writing, orbiting his development over the course of the show. His move to Boston is also something entirely new, and a development the spinoff will need to justify while presenting a new story for his law enforcement work to revolve around.

The show is the latest in a long line of spinoffs being produced for CBS, including the upcoming Sherriff Country, a spinoff of Fire Country, and an untitled The Equalizer offshoot starring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz. This makes Blue Bloods another TV universe for the network, which is also home to the NCIS and FBI shows. However, this spinoff is different because it also acts as a sequel to the original show, bringing a lead character to a new location for the purpose of continuing his story.

Our Take On Boston Blue’s Confirmation

The Spinoff Is Good News For Blue Bloods Fans

Given the outcry over the original show’s cancellation, Boston Blue is good news that CBS sees potential in continuing the show even after the flagship series has ended. While Danny being on his own will need a strong explanation to justify his move to Boston, it still allows for potential cameos from the Blue Bloods family later down the road. The show can continue to provide the same feel as the original, even if the family dynamic that made it so unique will be missed.
