‘Boston Blue’ Brings Back a Major Member of the Reagan Family for the ‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off

Another member of the Reagan family is shipping up to Boston to join Donnie Wahlberg‘s new show, if only for a short while. Bridget Moynahan has officially signed on to reprise her role as Erin Reagan in the premiere episode of Boston Blue, making her the first Blue Bloods veteran confirmed to be returning for the spin-off. Wahlberg confirmed the news himself on Instagram, sharing a photo of himself and Moynahan together on the Toronto-based set. In addition to helping ease viewers into the new show when it begins on October 17, she’s also slated to direct an episode of the CBS series sometime in its first season.

“Reunited and it feels so good!” Wahlberg wrote in his post as he shared Moynahan’s role in Boston Blue. While Danny Reagan’s return to television following Blue Bloods‘ end is exciting, many fans were clamoring to see more of the family that made the police procedural so beloved. Wahlberg, for his part, has had similar hopes about bringing more of his old co-stars on board, telling fans to “stay tuned” regarding the fate of the other Reagans. With his television prosecutor sister now in tow, he also teased, “More fun (and surprises) to come,” alongside his photo with Moynahan, perhaps hinting that the likes of Frank (Tom Selleck) or Jamie (Will Estes) could take a trip to visit next.

Boston Blue is still a ways away from assembling the old dinner table fans remember. Erin is only the third Reagan in line to appear in the series so far, with the other two being Danny and his son, Sean, who was recently recast as the series looks to take the character in a new direction from the flagship series. Thanksgiving star Mika Amonsen will be embodying the role originally played by Andrew Terraciano throughout the 14-season run of Blue Bloods. For Sean, the move to start his police career in Massachusetts was all about beginning fresh on his own terms outside of New York, where the Reagan family had so deeply established themselves as upholders of law and order. It then sets up a father-son storyline when Danny decides to make the same move, putting an emphasis once again on the family bonds that tie the Reagans together.

Where Is Erin Reagan at the End of ‘Blue Bloods’?

When viewers last saw Erin in Blue Bloods, she got a moment of peace to talk things over with her ex-husband Jack (Peter Hermann), and the two decided to give things another go. They remarried at a private ceremony at city hall and decided to hold off on telling the family until another time, but it was an overall happy ending for the couple that hints at a brighter future. What she’ll bring to the table in Boston Blue remains to be seen, though she’ll nonetheless be a welcome face for Danny as he adjusts to his new life in a new city. The spin-off series will see Detective Reagan enter a familiar situation to his own in New York, becoming the new police partner of a member of the prominent Silver family who, much like the Reagans, has justice running in their blood. Sonequa Martin-Green co-stars with Wahlberg, alongside Ernie HudsonGloria ReubenMaggie Lawson, and Marcus Scribner.
