Episode Came Early In The Series, But Later Than It Should Have

Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) is one of the driving forces behind the success of CBS’s hit series, “Blue Bloods.” Many of the storylines revolve around Reagan’s navigation of the political issues deep within the halls of 1 Police Plaza. While he is the focus of many of those storylines, he wouldn’t get very far without his inner circle. His crew includes Deputy Commissioner Garrett Moore (Gregory Jbara), who focuses on the press; Sergeant Sid Gormley (Robert Clohessy), who has his finger on the pulse of the rank and file; and Detective Abigail Baker (Abigail Hawk), who serves as his liaison between anyone who wants to speak with him as well as keeping his schedule.

Abigail Baker is the longest-running of the trio, the only one that has been with Reagan since the beginning (per Fandom). She earned his trust many times by bringing the utmost professionalism to her duties and not being afraid to speak her mind whenever she feels strongly about a topic. She always seems to know when to say something and when to not.

After thirteen years with Frank Reagan, he views her in similar regard as his daughter. There are multiple moments in the series that see them break through protocol and professional barriers to show platonic love and respect for each other personally. While there are many great moments for Baker, her best episode came early in the series, but later than it should have.

Baker proved her mettle

Detective Abigail Baker is much more than a secretary. However, viewers rarely got to see more than that in the first few seasons. She was relegated to pushing Frank Reagan’s schedule and standing at the door to let visitors in.

However, in Season 4, Episode 14, “Manhattan Queens,” Baker spoke at the annual police chiefs symposium when she was verbally harassed by the Suffolk County Deputy Chief, who had been asking her out consistently. She not only shut him down with a beautiful quip about his “size,” but then went on to conduct an investigation into his conduct and prove him to be responsible for racing a car and posting the video to taunt the police.

Abigail Hawk, herself, listed this episode as one of her favorites in an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “I could take up the entire interview listing my favorite episodes and why, but if I had to choose, [one of my favorites would be] ‘Manhattan Queens,’ where the Suffolk County Chief of Police demeans Baker in a room full of men by saying he would love for her to stop and frisk him, because he’s ‘packing, if you know what I mean.’ She brilliantly shuts him down with one decisive sentence: ‘Stop and Frisk is highly ineffective when it comes to finding the itty-bitty contraband.’ Mic. Drop.”

It took 81 episodes before the writers let her stretch her legs (per IMDb), but we’re glad they finally did.
