Danny Reagan is coming back to TV screens later this year in a Blue Bloods spinoff — but it’s not located in New York City.
CBS announced on Tuesday, February 18, that Boston Blue (working title) was ordered straight to series for the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
The show, which will expand the Blue Bloods universe, stars Donnie Wahlberg as his former character detective Danny Reagan. The spinoff will follow the former NYPD officer as he “takes on a position” with the Boston P.D., according to the network.
“Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” the official logline reads.

Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis will serve as showrunners and executive producers on Boston Blue. Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed and Wahlberg, 55, are also on board to executive produce the project.
There is currently no word on whether any of Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods costars — or anyone else from the Reagan family — will reprise their roles for the new series.Wahlberg, 55, starred on Blue Bloods for 14 seasons from 2010 until the show’s end in 2024. The show followed the lives of the Reagan family, helmed by NYPD commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and his father, former police commissioner Henry Reagan (Len Cariou).
Wahlberg’s Danny is the eldest living Reagan sibling. His sister, Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), is an ADA with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, while their youngest brother, Jamie Reagan (Will Estes), graduated law school only to become a police officer like all the men in their family. (They had one more brother, Joe Reagan, who died on the job before the series began.)
During the series finale, which aired in December 2024, Danny had a heart-to-heart with his grandfather about his romantic prowess — and left his future open ended. (Danny shares two sons with his late wife, Linda, but grew close to his partner Maria Baez, played by Marisa Ramirez, toward the end of the series.)
“I always told you not to bring the job home,” Henry told Danny during the finale, noting that the “problem now is you have no one not to bring it home to.” He then told Danny to promise him he’d “find that someone” after this case.
Danny listened to his grandpa’s warning and proceeded to ask Baez out for pizza before the final scene.
Wahlberg exclusively told Us Weekly in December 2024 that the sweet moment between the two characters left the door open for a future romance. “I think they stand in the doorway of possibility,” the actor teased.
He added, “I really enjoyed the arc that we shared together with Danny and Baez as them evolving as friends and partners. And building a real love and respect for each other that didn’t really have to turn into a relationship — at least [until] perhaps in the final episode.”

Wahlberg also shared at the time that he was hopeful his “next endeavor” would be “something a fraction as special” as Blood Blues had been.
Wahlberg hinted at a possible spinoff during that same interview, telling Us, “I love the character, and I certainly thought there were more stories that we could tell with him.”
He played coy about whether a new series was in the works, adding, “I’m not saying there will be a spinoff, I’m just saying I haven’t closed the door on the character.”
CBS Studios president David Stapf, meanwhile, told Deadline in July 2024 that the network was “taking [their] time” in terms of creating another chapter for the Blue Bloods universe. “We’ve got to get it right,” he added
